Introduction: This is the evaluation of two movies and comparisons between both in how they use their techniques.

Spirit away

Spirit away is an animation created by studio Ghibli with an intense and gripping storyline that had people constantly on the edge of the seats. The plot of the story is a female who wonders onto a land were monsters roam, and due to a curse that was put upon her parents she now needs to break the curse and turn her parents back to normal. In comparison to that of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street this plot is more engaging and fit for a wider target audience that is commonly used to the genre as the musical aspect of The Demon barber can put people off.
The characters in the animation all have a unique type and wacky range of personalities such as emotional, sad, happy, vibrant and joyful. This can be seen at the beginning scene at 17 minutes and 47 seconds. Within this scene the audience is shown a multitude of different characters of different shapes and sizes that will later be defined within the animation. The Demon Barber introduces the characters within a different way through time introducing new characters to the story and gradually letting them bond with the main character.

The setting of Spirit away is that of a modern yet still contains vintage theme. This can be seen during the beginning scene as the main character and her parents drive in a car drive through the forest, however when we progress through the story most of the contraptions and designs didn’t use electricity within their scenes. The Demon Barber setting stays with that of a vintage touch throughout the movie.

Within this movie the point of view follows the main character Haku Miyu Irino from a third person perspective. The movie has us follow the main character in all of her adventures and shows us her emotions that she has throughout the movie. The point of view allows the audience to be able to see the story through Haku’s eyes and allows the audience to be able to connect with the main character whilst in The Demon Barber’s point of view is that of a wrapped perspective.

The themes of Sprit Away is that of a thrilling and heart-warming and is an emotional journey that started because of greed. At the beginning of the movie near the time of 18.14-25 you can see the parents of Haku eating food and without being considerate to why or who the food was made for. This portrays a message in the movie to not be selfish, and to be considerate as in life you don’t know who you will meet and how they can change your life, for the better and for the worse.
The genre of this move is fantasy/ animation. It achieves this as the animation was hand drawn and has certain features such as witches, dragons and other characters that switch the perspective of the movie from that of a comedy. Due to the nature of the animation its more family friendly and wouldn’t be classed as that of a horror due to the colour and the scenes that can connect to the audience on an emotional level.

The language that was used was that of a simple yet gripping throughout the movie because of the various scenarios and scenes that were to follow the story of the movie. This can be seen at the time 1hr 32mintues where the dialogue that is in the movie was portrayed within a certain way that set up for the content of witches and other characters to interact with each other.

The music in the movie was used to at different moments to help the characters express their emotions and also set the mood of the following scene. This can be shown at the beginning of the movie at 2 minutes 54 seconds where music was calm and relaxing to make the audience become more immerged with it as it was the beginning however when compared to that of the ending the music had more of a sad tone which was also illustrated by the characters.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street directed by Tim Burton with an musical that will have people humming and wanting to see what happens next during the movie. The movie follows the main character Sweeney Todd who was once a lively and happy person but due to him being wrongly temporarily banished and his daughter taken from him, it changed who he was and his perspective on things and thus begins sets the ground for what’s to follow. This then brings a motive for the barber, which is to get his daughter back. This movie when compared to that of Sprit Away is more interactive with the audience as it reaches to them through a musical aspect whilst Spirit Away only focuses mainly on the content of the movie.

The characters in this movie all have different traits and ways of operating, which represent different things. Anthony Hope represents hope as in the movie he is a naïve and youthful sailor that wants to find love and this can be seen as the constant theme of London is dark and miserable and he can be seen as light and as someone who doesn’t belong in the themes as he is more vibrant than most of the characters. This can be seen at 24:50

The image above clearly shows this as whilst people are walking to their daily commute Anthony is looking up with a slower pace of those around him and with more of a meaning to be who is where he is.

The setting of the Sweeney Todd is that of a Victorian time with a strong and gritty theme of darkness and depression. This can be seen multiple times throughout the movie due to the dark lighting in the areas to help portray the setting of that time frame. Even the characters within the movie add to the setting by their clothes and hairstyles. The buildings at the time also added top the setting of the movie as it was vintage and that helped portray the setting properly as if there were modern cars and things from the current timeframe such as mobile phones.

The movies point of view focuses on two people whom the stories and interlinked with each other. The people who the movie is focused on are Sweeney Todd and Anthon. The movie follows Sweeney Todd first for us to get a grasp of what type of person that he is. Then it does the same with Antony. This helps to show the different range of characters and how these characters interact with these characters. The focus of the movie does not shift from these two characters.

The themes of the movie are that of a morbid and dismal theme. The reason why I believe this was done was because it will help with the setting and it was done effectively. However, when compared to the movie of Spirit away this is more effective. The reason it is more effective is because Sweeney is a musical, so they can portray the movie in a more vibrant aspect which the audience and get more engaged in whilst Spirit Away only has visual themes to engage the audience.

The genre of Sweeney Todd is that of a Thriller/Musical Drama. This can be seen due to the murders that occur during the movie to try and give the audience a heighted sense of emotional attachment to the main characters it does this by first letting us know the characters pain and motive. The audience can then use this to understand why the character acts within a certain manner within the movie. The singing in the movie defines it, as a musical drama is they aren’t only just singing, they are also moving the story along and progressing the scene.

The language that was used was in the movie was mainly that of a musical aspect however it did contain language that was also fit for the time frame. The dialog during certain times such as 54minutes 32seconds the speech is gritty and uncultured to help the audience to be able to immerge themselves within the movie.

The music within the scenes were used to main progress the plot of the movie however there were certain times where the main character and others wouldn’t be singing and there would be music there to define the pace of which the movie would be going at. The music also complemented the theme as the music that was played was played with strings and pianos instead of the current equipment treat are on offer to us. This movie’s music is portrayed, in comparison to the Spirit Away, is much better as it links in with multiple aspects of the movie such as the scenery, theme and tone to connect with the audience on a molecular level whilst Spirit Away music was just there to be epic.
